The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the preservation of lives and the maintenance of seamless vehicular mobility following a major multiple-vehicle collision that occurred along LASU–Isheri Road, precisely at Iyana School, inward Igando.
Preliminary findings indicate that the unfortunate incident involved a MACK flatbed truck, which reportedly suffered a catastrophic brake failure, causing the driver to lose effective control before violently colliding with a Toyota Sienna and two commercial tricycles, thereby triggering a serious multi-vehicle crash.
LASTMA personnel, who were on routine traffic surveillance and operational patrol within the corridor, responded with remarkable promptitude by immediately activating the Agency’s emergency response protocol. Their swift intervention was instrumental in rescuing the trapped victims, preventing secondary collisions and restoring the orderly flow of vehicular traffic along the affected route.
Working in close synergy with Officers of the Iba Police Division, the Agency coordinated the expeditious evacuation of the damaged vehicles and ensured the comprehensive clearance of the accident scene, thereby averting further traffic disruption and eliminating the risk of secondary crashes.
Regrettably, the accident left three occupants one male and two females with varying degrees of severe fracture injuries. Through the prompt and coordinated intervention of LASTMA Officers and other emergency responders, the victims were successfully extricated from the wreckage and immediately conveyed to El-Shaddai Hospital, where they are presently receiving specialised medical treatment.
The vehicles involved in the collision comprised a MACK flatbed truck, a Toyota (FGC 80 XE) and a TVS commercial tricycle (LSR 604 QP).
LASTMA traffic management officers remained at the scene throughout the emergency operation, diligently regulating vehicular movement, safeguarding commuters, and ensuring the complete restoration of normal traffic conditions following the successful evacuation exercise.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the professionalism, courage and rapid response exhibited by the Agency’s emergency personnel.
He further admonished motorists particularly operators of articulated and heavy-duty vehicles to subject their vehicles to comprehensive mechanical inspections before embarking on any journey with particular emphasis on the integrity and efficiency of braking systems.
According to him, “routine preventive maintenance of critical vehicle components remains indispensable in mitigating avoidable road traffic crashes and enhancing overall road safety across Lagos State”.
The General Manager further urged all motorists to exercise the highest level of caution, comply strictly with extant traffic laws and promptly report road traffic emergencies through LASTMA’s toll-free emergency short code 3367, to facilitate swift intervention by the Agency’s emergency response teams.
