Thus the National Assembly is advocating for increased funding for National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), emphasizing the critical need to prioritize the development of water transportation.
However, this call was made during a session where NIWA’s Managing Director, Bola Oyebamiji, presented the agency’s budget before the Joint Committee on Marine Transport in Abuja
Moreso, the lawmakers acknowledged ongoing challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and frequent accidents, urging substantial investment in the sector to mitigate risks and improve safety.
The Managing Director of NIWA, Oyebamiji emphasized the critical importance of Nigeria’s waterways for economic growth and connectivity noting that infrastructural development such as acquisition of vessels and construction on inland water ports will be deployed.
In addition, the National Inland Waterways Authority ( NIWA) had proposed N9.054billion as revenue to be remitted into the Consolidated Revenue Fund ( CFR) from the total targeted revenue of N34.389billion in the 2025 fiscal year.
