More than 20 countries on Saturday called for a tripling of global nuclear power capacity at United Nations climate talks, as part of efforts to reach net zero emissions by 2050 .
A statement endorsed by countries from the United States and Ghana to Japan and several European countries said nuclear power plays a “critical role” in achieving the goal of carbon neutrality.
The use of nuclear energy as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels is controversial as environmental groups worry about the safety and disposal of nuclear waste.
