Barcelona midfielder Gavi has undergone surgery to tear the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee, the club announced on Tuesday.
Gavi suffered a horrific injury during Spain’s Euro 2024 qualifying match against Georgia last Sunday.
The 19-year-old left the field in tears during his team’s 3-1 win and a subsequent MRI scan revealed he also injured his meniscus in addition to the ACL tear.
The club confirmed that Gavi also underwent a meniscus repair on Tuesday.
The LaLiga side said in their statement that “Gavi’s recovery will determine when he is fit to return to the team.”
Gavi has become an important player for Barcelona and Spain in recent seasons. He started every match for Spain at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, and became the tournament’s youngest scorer since Pelé in 1958.
