The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has sounded the alarm that most faculties and units in Nigeria’s public universities are understaffed as lecturers resign in search of greener pastures.
The union said low and delayed salaries, unpaid salaries, poor infrastructure, lack of respect for the university community and a seeming waning sense of hope were some of the factors leading to the officials resigned in recent months.
The Chairman of the Ibadan branch of ASUU, Professor Ayo Akinwole, who said this on Tuesday in Ibadan, added that public universities in Nigeria are in very bad conditions, with tension frustration and disappointment are clearly visible on the faces of low-paid teachers.
According to Akinwole, except for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who will take stock of the situation by amending the conditions of service in terms of salaries, allowances and infrastructure, many good people will continue to resign and leave the land.
