Kaduna State health workers call off strike

The Kaduna State Branch of National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNMW), has decided to officially call off their indefinite strike which began on the 2nd of October 2024.

The industrial action call-off was successful following a smooth negotiation with the Kaduna State government officials.

The Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe had on Thursday October 24, held a meeting with the union leaders and key government officials that resulted in the suspension of the industrial action.

The attendees at the meeting include the Head of Service, Secretary to the State Government and the Commissioner of Health.

Meeting chaired by deputy governor where health workers welfare was discussed and during the meeting was the governor’s directives to organize a committee on Labour matters to expedite negotiations regarding the new minimum wage with the Labour unions within the next seven days and to submit a report for implementation.

The health workers request would be considered in the new minimum wage negotiations, stating the government’s dedication to address their concerns and ensuring a better working conditions in the state.

A circular was issued to the members of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives urging workers to resume their duties commencing from 12 PM on Friday, October 25, 2024.

Circular which was signed by Conrade Yashi G. Nassa, the Public Relations Officer and Acting Secretary.

Circular reads: “The suspension of the strike marks a significant step towards restoring normalcy in the healthcare sector of Kaduna State, as health workers are now expected to return to their posts, providing essential services to the community.”

“The union, therefore, expressed appreciation for the government’s willingness to engage in dialogue and work towards solutions that benefit both the workers and the citizens they serve.”
