IGP, Military Chiefs summoned by Senate over ongoing Insecurity in the country

The Senate had on Tuesday responded to the excessive ongoing insecurity within the country, summoning top officials from various security agencies.

Security chiefs will together engage in an interactive session next week with the senators to collectively address the problem as mandated by a motion titled “Spate of Insecurity in Nigeria.” This motion, unanimously sponsored by all 109 senators during Tuesday’s plenary, reflects the collective concern of the legislative body.

Series of cases has recently been reported in different states like Plateau, Abuja, Benue, Ekiti and others, which include increase in killings, kidnappings and other criminal activities.

Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, while presenting the motion, said, the Senate’s deep sorrow at the rising incidents of killings, kidnappings, banditry and other criminal activities nationwide.

Leader Bamidele categorically specified incidents, including the tragic killings in Agatu local government area of Benue State, the brutal murders of eleven residents in Logo local government area of Benue State, and various kidnappings in the Federal Capital Territory resulting in victims being killed even after ransom is being paid.

Recall Ekiti State incident, where two traditional rulers were killed and primary school pupils abducted, emphasizing the overall insecurity in the country.

Further noting the unfortunate bomb explosion in Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State, claiming at least five lives and causing extensive damage to residential houses, schools, hotels, and religious centers. The Senate is also concerned about the ongoing violence in Mangu, Bokkos, and Barkin Ladi communities in Plateau State, leading to the loss of several lives.

The Senate has in response to these crisis, resolved to reaffirm its commitment by inviting security chiefs to an interactive session in finding a long lasting solution to the critical crisis in the country.
